The BLENKINSOPP Coat of Arms can be found today appearing on the gravesand ruins of buildings belonging to the BLENKINSOPPs of Northumberland, England. In Heraldry there is a specific way to describe a coat of arms. However the authors have chosen to try to describe our coat of Arms interms that all can understand.
The crest is that of a Griffin or Gryphon, which has the head, breast, foreclaws, and wings of an eagle, and the hindquarters and tail of a lion. It also has the ears of a lion. Standing on one foot in a changingposition, it is referred to in heraldry as "rampant." The wreath and mantle have been painted by the artist in the dominant colors of the coat of arms. The red being the outside and the gold the underside of the mantle. The mantle is curved and swirled to suggest its having been torn and cut in battle. The BLENKINSOPP helmet was of iron. In the painting it is shown with the visor closed, and is designated as being in profile. This indicates the rank of "esquire" or gentleman. Thus, the BLENKINSOPP Clan of England was probably of the large middle class society. The shield has a "principal charge", a gold bar running horizontally across between the "fese point" and the "naval point" of the shield. There is a second "charge" of three gold "garbs" or wheat sheaves. One on the "Dexter Chief" (Upper left), one on the " Sinister Chief" (upper right) and one at the "Middle Base". The shield, itself, has the dominant color of "tincture" of red.

Ralph was from Northumberland Co., England and landed in James City, VA, 23 July
1640. He gave up his "head right" (50 acres of land in VA) to pay his passage to America. We think he moved up the James River and settled in Henrico Co. a few miles east of what is now Richmond. (Abstract of Virginia Land Patents and Grants 1623-1800, VA Archives, Richmond, VA) He probably married and fathered several children or at least 2 sons. His land was probably in England, not VA. Some say after he landed, he changed his name from Blankensopp to Blankinship.

Ralph Blankinship Sr. was born about 1660 in possibly Cambria, England and died about 1714 at Roxdale Estate, Henrico Co., VA. He married Martha.

Richard Kennon petitioned for 8,000 acres for importing 90 white persons and seventy negroes in 1686 and 1687. Ralph Blenkship was named as one of those imported. (Gayle King Blankenship's book "Blankenship Ancestors") The first reference to Ralph Blankship appears 1 Apr 1690, Henrico Order Book 1678-1693, page 326. I have copies of the original, and of the handwritten copy made during the Revolutionary period. The entry reads: Upon the petition of Rich'd Kennon these may certify that there is due unto him eight thousand acres of land for ye inportacon of ninety servts. into this colony whose names are under written and for seventy persons more being negroes, the same being legally prov'd by his oath in open court. The name Ralph Blankship appears as the 68th name on a list of 90 persons.
We know that on June 16, 1714 Ralph Blankship was named as head right of Capt. Henry Harrison & Philip Ludwell for land they claimed in Surry and Isle of Wright. (Patent. 10:165).
The Isle of Wright, Virginia is a small village 17.5 miles WSW of Newport News, VA. Surry is another village 17.5 miles NNW of Isle of Wright. It is very close to Jamestown and is about 32 miles from where Ralph Blankinship first homesteaded in Henrico County, VA. The Isle of Wright is about 45 miles southeast of Ralph's original homestead. The legal court document shows that Ralph was being claimed as a person whose sea transportation from Europe (England) was paid for by Capt. Henry Harrison and Philip Ludwell. The Virginia colony law at the time allowed anyone who paid for the transportation of another person to Virginia could claim the right (head right) to possession of 50 acres of land as their reward for bringing that person to America. If this claim for land was valid, and not a fraudulent claim, it would mean that Capt. Henry Harrison and Philip Ludwell, had in fact, paid for Ralph's return voyage from England to America. Did Ralph sense that his death was imminent circa 1713 and wanted to make a trip to his homeland just before he died? Did the debt Ralph incurred near the time of his death result from his having to pay for one leg of his voyage to Europe? Apr 1695 Henrico Co. VA Will & Deed Book (1688-1697), p. 577, Ralph Blankinship deposition states about 33 years of age.
